Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo Cars confirmed that its technology servers were hacked by unknown attackers, resulting in the leaking of information about its R&D plans.
“​Volvo Cars have become aware that one of its file repositories has been illegally accessed by a third party,” the company revealed today about Volvo Cars discloses security breach leading to R&D data theft.
Volvo Cars have discovered investigators have determined that locating some of that company’s R&D property has been stolen during the intrusion. Volvo has earlier today concluded that, based on available information, there may have been an impact on the company’s operation.
Volvo has stated that it will comply with the relevant authorities’ investigation of the incident, although it can take several months to thoroughly go over the stolen information.
“The company does not see, with currently available information, that this has an impact on the safety or security of its customers’ cars or their personal data,” Volvo added.
The Snatch Extortion Gang Targeted An Attack
The company did not reveal any other information about the Volvo Cars discloses security breach leading to R&D data theft breach, but the gang has claimed responsibility for the theft.
The extortion group added an entry on their biggest breach-data leak site on November 30 about intruding on Volvo Car Corporation’s servers and stealing files during the intrusion, together with screenshots of the stolen files as proof.
Since Snatch then leaked 35.9 MB of files claiming to be stolen from Volvo servers, its alleged data access has drawn fire from the car manufacturer.

“Volvo Cars does not comment on speculation about potential cyber security attacks but takes all potential threats to its cyber security and thefts of its property seriously,” Volvo said.

When BleepingComputer asked Volvo to confirm if the screenshots the Snatch extortion gang shared with it to prove there was some connection between targeting Swedish automaker Volvo and Morla ransomware are genuine, a Volvo spokesperson replied “We cannot comment any further.”
